Both sides hardened their positions this week, each demanding reparations, while talks between Oman and Iran over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz were described as at an advanced stage but far from resolved. Oil rose again on the impasse, keeping energy in focus and inflation nerves alive. The bigger overhang is Wednesday's July CPI print. With the indexes perched near record highs, there is little cushion for a hot number, and investors spent Tuesday reluctant to commit capital before seeing it. A quiet, cautious session driven more by what happens tomorrow than by anything that happened today.

Everyone Told You to Eat More Protein. Then 350 Studies Muddied the Water.

The scoop: Somewhere in the last decade, protein quietly became the answer to almost everything. Tired? More protein. Losing muscle? More protein. Turning sixty and worried about getting frail? You already know the refrain. For older adults especially, the advice has been reassuringly simple: eat more of it, and keep eating more as the years stack up.
A sweeping new review suggests the story is more tangled than that, and in places it points the other way. Published in Cell Press Blue on 31 July 2026, researchers Knopf and Lamming at the University of Wisconsin-Madison pulled together more than 350 studies on protein restriction and aging. The work was funded by the National Institute on Aging, the Wisconsin Partnership Program and UW-Madison, which is worth knowing before anyone tries to sell you a tub of anything on the strength of it.
Before we go further, one honest caveat, because it matters more than anything else here. This review does not say older adults should eat less protein. It says something more careful and, in a way, more useful. Hold that thought. We will come back to it, because it is the whole point.
What the review actually looked at.
The authors were not running a new experiment on a group of retirees. They were standing back and reading the field, more than 350 studies at once, asking what happens across an organism when protein intake goes down. Some of that evidence comes from human studies. A great deal of it comes from laboratory work and animal models, particularly mice. That distinction runs through everything that follows, so it is worth planting a flag on it now: a signal in a mouse is a clue, not a verdict for your dinner plate.
Read that way, a pattern emerges. Across the body of work, lower protein intake was associated with improved metabolism, altered nutrient signalling, reduced cellular damage and better cell maintenance. Associated with. Not proven to cause, in humans, on the strength of this review. These are the mechanisms researchers watch when they are trying to understand why some interventions seem to slow the wear and tear of aging.
There is a particular value in a review like this, and also a particular limit. Reading 350 studies at once smooths out the noise of any single, small, easily-hyped result, which is a real strength. But a review is still only as sound as the studies feeding it, and when a fair share of those studies live in petri dishes and mouse colonies, the honest verdict is "promising and unsettled," not "settled." That is not a criticism of the work. It is simply where the science sits today.
A hormone that shows up when protein drops.
One of the more intriguing threads runs through a hormone called FGF21, which rises when protein falls. Protein is not one thing. It is a bundle of amino acids, and the review singles out three in particular, methionine, isoleucine and valine, as drivers of the growth pathways that are tied to aging. That is a useful reframing. The conversation so often stops at "how many grams," when the more interesting question may be which building blocks, from which foods, doing what once they are inside us. It is early, and the review is careful, but it hints that the future of this advice is more textured than a single number on a nutrition label.
Why "more protein with age" became the default.
None of this appeared in a vacuum. The push toward higher protein for older adults grew out of a real and serious concern, the loss of muscle and strength that can quietly erode independence in later life. Anyone who has watched a parent go from confidently carrying the groceries to gripping the handrail knows the stakes are not abstract. That worry is legitimate, and it is why current guidance has drifted upward, to roughly 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, close to double the older figure. If you have felt nagged toward more protein lately, you were not imagining it. The advice moved, and for reasons that made sense at the time.
The review does not tear that down. It complicates it. It suggests the "more is always better" instinct may have overshot, and that the optimal amount is not a fixed climb upward for everyone who has a birthday.
What the authors are, and are not, saying.
Here is the careful bit, the thought we parked earlier. The authors are not telling older adults to cut protein. They explicitly note that some older adults need more, that pregnant women need more, and that physically active people benefit from more. What they are arguing is subtler and, honestly, more sensible than any blanket rule: protein needs should be personalised by activity level, not by age alone.
Let that sink in for a second. It quietly dismantles the idea that a number on a chart, indexed to how old you are, should decide what lands on your plate. A lean, active 68-year-old who walks, gardens and lifts a little is not the same nutritional case as a mostly sedentary 68-year-old, and pretending otherwise was always a bit of a fiction. Age is a blunt instrument. What you actually do with your body is a sharper one.
So the takeaway is not "eat less." It is "stop letting your birth year make this decision for you." That is a harder message to fit on a label, which may be exactly why the simpler one caught on. And because so much of the underlying evidence is mechanistic or from animals, the wise posture is curiosity, not conversion. This is a reason to ask a better question of your own routine and, if it matters to you, your doctor. It is not a reason to overhaul your kitchen by Thursday on the word of a mouse.

Let activity, not age, set the dial. The review's central argument is that protein needs track what your body does, not how many candles are on the cake. If you walk, garden, lift or move most days, your needs may sit higher than a sedentary peer's. That does not make them worthless, it makes them early. When a headline leaps from a mouse to your dinner plate, slow down and ask whether the human evidence has actually caught up yet. Usually it is still on the way.
Read "associated with" as the careful phrase it is. Lower protein intake was linked to better metabolic and cellular markers across these studies. Linked is not the same as caused, and a review of existing work is not a controlled trial run on you. Hold the finding as an interesting direction to explore, not a proven instruction to follow.
Do not read this as permission to under-eat protein. The authors are explicit that some older adults need more, that active people benefit from more, and that pregnant women need more. Muscle loss in later life is a real threat to independence, and this review does not wave it away. If anything, it asks you to be more precise, not more restrictive.
Bring the question to someone who knows your history. If protein intake is something you actively manage, especially alongside kidney concerns, diabetes or a recovery from illness, this is a conversation for your doctor or a dietitian, not a decision to make from a newsletter.
